Majors: Campers spend about two-thirds of their day in the “Major” class, allowing them to focus and gain in-depth of knowledge in their chosen scientific area - Neuroanatomy or Robotics.  

Neuroanatomy Majors: In this major, students will learn the anatomy and physiology of various systems in the brain and apply what they know to fictitious neurological patients. Specifically, we will focus on the cerebral cortex, various sub-cortical structures, the visual system, somatosensory system, and the motor system in the brain and spinal cord. The culminating event on Friday will be a case-studies test where students will “act” like neurologists to predict where a lesion in the brain or spinal cord is in a person, as well as “acting” like neuroradiologists in order to predict the symptoms and prognosis of patients with particular nervous system lesions. 

We will be using a combination of picture- and video-intensive lectures and hands-on activities such as building model systems using Play-doh or Model Magic, dissecting a sheep brain, and engaging in lab activities and demos in order to explore the neuroanatomy of the visual system (Monday), somatosensory systems (Tuesday) and the motor systems (Wednesday and Thursday). Campers will get to research various local labs prior to the Wednesday field trip, which will include touring a neuroimaging facility and a neuroscience lab, guest lectures by the researchers in those labs, and several Q&A sessions. The culminating assessment will be a partner test on Friday where campers get to “diagnose” fictitious patients coming to a neurology clinic as well as predict symptoms of a person based on pictures of their brain or spinal cord “radiographic images”.

On Friday afternoon, parents will rotate to various stations staffed by the campers to experience some of the activities and labs for themselves, and then be taught neuroanatomy by the campers.

Robotics Majors:  In this major, students will explore the emerging science of robot mechanics as they build and program their robot from scratch, remotely control it, experiment with light and pressure sensors, create drive trains for varying terrains, and play robotic sports.

Students will use the VEX robotics platform, the world’s premier classroom robotics platform.   We will begin by building a chassis - our robot needs a stable structure to provide physical support and like a skeleton, it holds everything in place and is the building block from which other systems can be added.   Next, we will mount motors to the chassis and add wheels and gears to complete the drive system so our robot can move as we learn about speed and torque.

As we build and program our robots, we will explore electrical circuits and built power (batteries) as well as communications systems (radio controller) for our robots.  As we employ design thinking we will learn about the engineering process to brainstorm, design, construct, test, and redesign as we used our robots to solve problems.   Finally, we will enhance our robots with sensors, robotic arms, and programming as we test their capabilities in several early challenges, including terrain challenge and a transportation challenge!  Our week will culminate in a finale presentation challenge of designing a robotics sport competition! 

Minors: In addition to the "Major" activities, students participate in “Minor” labs that allow them to gain a breadth of scientific knowledge by exploring different scientific disciplines.  These may include activities such as extracting the DNA of a strawberry or delving into forensic science with blood type analysis. 

Enrichment Activities in the afternoons and evenings give campers the opportunity for informal science learning, as well as leadership and problem-solving training through workshops, experiments, guest speakers, and recreational activities. Students will also attend a mid-program excursion to a local science venue.
