5th-8th grade: Marine Science & Astronomy

5th - 8th grade: Marine Science and Astronomy

Majors: Campers spend about two-thirds of their day in the “Major” class, allowing them to gain an in-depth knowledge in their chosen scientific area - Marine Science and Astronomy.

  • Astronomy:  Students will simulate the big bang theory, study the surface of the sun and measure its diameter, explore light diffraction and build their own water rockets!
  • Marine Biology: Students will investigate animal adaptations in a creative creature project, dissect a fish, learn how temperature and salinity create ocean currents, and create an “oil spill” to see how human actions impact the planet.

Minors: In addition to the "Major" activities, students participate in “Minor” labs that allow them to gain a breadth of scientific knowledge by exploring different scientific disciplines.  These may include activities such as extracting the DNA of a strawberry or delving into forensic science with blood type analysis.

Enrichment Activities in the afternoons and evenings give campers the opportunity for informal science learning, as well as leadership and problem-solving training through workshops, experiments, guest speakers, and recreational activities. Students will also attend a mid-program excursion to a local science venue.
