Sally Ride Science Camps for Girls (Day Camp)
At Caltech and MIT, we offer special day-only sessions of the Sally Ride Science Camp. These programs feature a convenient 5-day schedule, with classes from approximately 9am to 5pm each day. Please note that while day camp students attend a truncated version of the program, they do learn the full curriculum offered at the overnight camp. Beginning and intermediate Majors are offered. (Note: advanced 8th graders should consider the overnight programs rather than the day camps.)
4th - 6th Grade Campers
- Intro to Marine Science: Students will experiment with the physical and chemical properties of water, explore major marine ecosystems and phyla, and dissect a fish!
- Intro to Engineering: Students will learn the basic principles of physics and design while building bridges, towers, hovercrafts and automobiles that must survive performance trials and unexpected obstacles.
- Astronomy: Students will simulate the big bang theory, study the surface of the sun and measure its diameter, explore light diffraction and build their own water rockets!
- Marine Biology: Students will investigate animal adaptations in a creative creature project, dissect a fish, learn how temperature and salinity create ocean currents and create an “oil spill” to see how human actions impact the planet.
Enrichment Activities outside of class give girls an opportunity for informal science learning, as well as leadership and problem-solving training, through workshops, experiments and recreational activities. Students will also attend a mid-program excursion to a local science venue, and meet many new friends.
